John Mellencamp's No Better Than This Tour came to Abbotsford Tuesday night and a large crowd of excited fans cheered and sang along with the music icon.
The performance was already fine-tuned as Mellencamp and the band seamlessly transformed from rockabilly to acoustic to old-fashioned rock and roll.
Performing on a simple, almost barren stage, Mellencamp kicked the evening off with the Authority Song which brought most audience members to their feet. Many stayed there for the rest of the night.
After that he performed an almost endless list of Top 20 hits.
There were no unfamiliar songs on the play list as old favourites like Cherry Bomb, Jack and Diane, Small Town, Paper and Fire and R.O.C.K. In the USA were the order of the day.
Whether going all out with the band, or standing alone at centre stage with his acoustic guitar, Mellencamp, commanded the audience's attention for close to two hours.
As the show progressed, the fans became louder and louder and Mellencamp and the band fed off the energy.
By the time the band exited the stage and Mellencamp took his final bow, the concert had lived up to its name.
Mellencamp may believe in the old saying "always leave them wanting more" because, unlike most concerts, there was no encore.
Of course, by the end of the evening, he had few songs left to sing.
